ARCHIVE: Career Reboot

cbc radio

It had been 307 days since the last time I worked as a journalist. That’s a lot of time. Forty-four weeks. Ten months. An entire season of the NHL and the NBA. An entire year of school for Briana. A mild winter and a beautiful spring. On June 6, I had the opportunity to return to the industry. I feel like I made the most of the week I had at CBC.

The previous week was in radio, and not TV. It was current affairs, and not breaking news. It was with new people at a new station and it was only five days but it felt like a huge breakthrough. It was a new challenge. It was exciting. It’s a reboot. It just felt so good to learn again. And it was about time!

A lot of big stories happened in the past 10 months: The federal election. The evacuation of Fort McMurray. The trial of Matthew de Grood. Just to name a few. It was a bit of a weird feeling not being in a newsroom during them. As a journalist, I always want to be involved with getting the news out. Sharing articles on Facebook and Twitter isn’t the same though. So given the chance to do some work that people beyond my own friends actually heard was a huge energy boost.

The search continues though. That one week was more of an audition and nothing is guaranteed. But as I’ve said before, it’s a foot in the door and considering it had been so long, I’m going to count it as a huge leap forward.
