July 4, 2007 –
Yellow. Orange. Pink. Bright purple. Colours of an African sunrise as seen through the plane window. Too bad I was sitting on the west side. I expect to see it everyday when the rooster crows and the dogs start to bark. From on top of very hilly Kigali, it should be beautiful. Definitely beats watching Sportscentre in the morning.
I touched down in Kigali where the weather was fine: 23C, no wind, partly cloudy. Unfortunately, my luggage did not touch down with me. They were missing a lot as many people had to make complaints.
It’s 2:30 a.m. and I’m sitting in my tent-like bed. Being here is amazing. Two minutes after getting off the plane and I was already enjoying it, no luggage and all. Hanging out with the girls will be fun. Stayed up playing cards. Got money changed, with help from the temp fixer, Leon. Seems like he will be a very helpful guy. I’m going to try speaking half and half English and French with him. Also hung out at Bourbon Coffee, a very cool coffee and internet cafe. I think I will try a coffee some time.
July 4 is also Liberation Day, which meant celebrations! Though I didn’t see any, Leon pointed out that the soccer match on TV was between government Members of Parliament and military officials. Pretty cool. I hope my luggage comes tomorrow!
